What Does the Scrollbar Thumb Really Tell You?

A proportional thumb maps viewport ÷ loaded content — not distance to the end.

Precise claimIn this live demonstration, as with a classic proportional scrollbar, thumb length follows the visible viewport height divided by the total height of currently loaded content (clientHeight ÷ scrollHeight); on a page that keeps loading, it maps what exists now, not how much remains.

In this live demonstration, as with a classic proportional scrollbar, thumb length follows the visible viewport height divided by the total height of currently loaded content (clientHeight ÷ scrollHeight); on a page that keeps loading, it maps what exists now, not how much remains.

This feed can keep loading, so the "end" the thumb seemed to measure had not finished existing. The container you just judged is a real scroll box — these were its measured numbers at the moment you answered:

The thumb correctly mapped the content loaded at that moment, but it could not justify how close the reader was to the feed's final end because the denominator was still changing.

This proportional thumb maps what is loaded. A growing feed keeps changing the map.

The rebuilt model

You assumed:: The thumb is a countdown: its position and length say how far through the page you are, so two-thirds down means roughly two-thirds done.
The actual model:: A proportional thumb is a live ratio — viewport height over total loaded content height — with position from scrollTop over the scrollable range; when content grows, both are recomputed and the map silently redraws.
The variable that failed you:: Total loaded content height (scrollHeight) — the denominator the visitor reasonably assumed was fixed.

Run it again — change one variable
